400 Years of the African American Experience

This film sheds light on the 400 Years of African American History Commission’s efforts and advanced the message of African American empowerment, remembrance, education, engagement and healing in our nation’s iconic places.

Challenge: Guide the National Park Service in commemorating 400 years of African American history with a message that was both emotionally resonant and culturally respectful, during a moment when institutional messaging had stalled.
Strategy: Directed and executive produced an original film centered on cultural authenticity, assembling and empowering a creative team of six African American women to shape the narrative. The piece was built around Maya Angelou’s “Still I Rise,” creating a layered story of resilience, beauty, and shared experience.
Result: Widely recognized as a national model for inclusive federal storytelling, the film has been celebrated for its artistic integrity, emotional depth, and its ability to engage and educate across audiences.
